In publicising social issues of grave and necessary importance - the matter of the critical mass is always the water shed moment.  Also called the tipping point, this important step recognizes the need to enroll activists who are not only members of the indigenous group on the front line of an issue but also those who are passive observers, unaffected by the issue.

And so it came to be that leaders of the civil rights movement recognized the need to enlist white Americans to join the cause of black Americans.
